The Glossary has been published as a “work in progress” rather than wait until it is complete before publishing, since it is likely to be a quite large project to complete. The available pages can be seen as links below and in “therecipecorner Pages”.
Biscuits
Biscuits are usually seen as a small flat dry sweet or plain cake of many varieties, baked from a dough with added ingredients to introduce different characteristics. The biscuit recipes included in therecipecorner include Ginger Nut Biscuits, Oaties, Eccles Cakes (oaties and eccles cakes are included as they serve the same purpose as a biscuit!). Bread
Bread is a food made from a dough of flour or meal mixed with water or milk, usually raised with a yeast or baking powder together with other added ingredients to introduce different characteristics. The dough is then placed on a mold or molded into a required arrangement and baked in the oven. Bread can be in very many varieties and shapes and sizes, including home baked bread and rolls through to the highly processed breads and rolls bought at bakers, shops and supermarkets. Breakfast
Breakfast is the first meal of the day. Breakfast takes many different forms and can be simply something very light to eat such as bread, rolls, crackers, toast, etc. on there own or spread with margarine or butter. These can also be spread with jam, a preserve or some other spread of choice or eaten with fruit; a bowl of cerial (too many varieties to list here) either dry or with milk, yogurt or cream etc; a selection of fruit on there own; or something much more substantial like the “Full English Breakfast” (can include bacon, eggs, sausages and mushrooms and other ingredients specific to the locality) offered in hotels and guest houses, which can be a quite substantial meal. Cake
Cake is a baked food, usually in a loaf or layer form, including small cakes made in molds or cups and trays. Typically, cakes are made from a mixture of flour sugar and eggs, with other smaller quantities of ingredients added to introduce particular characteristics. There are many cake recipes included in therecipecorner, including Victoria Sandwich, Light Fruit Cake, Boiled Fruit Cake, Oatmeal Scones, etc. See also the expanded Cake glossary entry .
Dessert
Dessert is the sweet, usually last course of a meal. The dessert can take many forms from simply raw fruit like apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, etc. through to highly complex combinations of ingredients, including cakes, pies, crumbles, jelly, biscuit, custard, ice cream and a wide variety of sweet sauces. Dinner
Dinner is the meal usually taken in the evening, or at midday if that is that meal is the main meal of the day. Dinner is usually composed of a number of vegetables (particularly including seasonal vegetables and salad) such as potatoes (cooked in many ways, including boiling, frying and baking), carrots, peas or beans, sweetcorn, parsnips, rice, etc. served with a main featured food such as meat (for example cuts of beef or lamb, sausages, bacon etc.) cooked simply or in pies, in savoury crumbles etc. with a suitable sauce such as gravy. Fish
Fish are cold-blooded aquatic vertibrates, having jaws, gills and usually fins and a skin covered in scales. See also the expanded Fish glossary entry .
Food
Food is any substance containing nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats, that can be eaten. See our Common Terms page for a “translation” between British and American usage.
Fruit
The fruit is that part of a plant that supports the seeds and is edible, such as stawberry, gooseberry, apple, pear, orange, etc. See also the expanded Fruit glossary entry.
Lunch
Lunch is the meal usually eaten during the middle of the day. Lunch can be anything from fruit, a sandwich, through to something much more substantial including meat, fish, salad, vegetables, rice pasta etc. See also the expanded Lunch glossary entry.
Meat
Meat is the flesh of mammals used as food, as distinguished from the flesh of birds and fish.

Pastry
Pastry is a dough of flour, water, shortening and sometimes other ingredients baked, in a pie case for instance. >See also the expanded Pastry glossary entry for information on making pastry successfully.
Poultry
Birds reared and /or kept for their eggs or meat.
Sauces
A sauce is any liquid or semi-liquid preparation eaten with food to enhance its flavour, including home made gravy, bought brown and tomato sauce and for example. The sauce recipes included in therecipecorner include the sauces made for Macaroni Cheese, Chicken Curry With Coconut and

Savoury
“Savoury” is attractive to the sense of taste or smell, salty, spicy but not sweet. See also the expanded Savoury glossary entry.

Soup
Soup is a liquid food made by boiling or simmering meat, fish, vegetables, etc, usually served hot at the beginning of a meal. See also the expanded Soup glossary entry.
Supper
